Village Squire, 1977-09, Page 29Like Wroxeter, Gorrie too was depend-
ent Maitland River and it adds a good deal
of interest to the village today with a nice
park at the Gorrie Conservation Area near
the river. On the way into the village
there's a small craft and antique shop on
your left at the rear of a house, called The
Roost.
Gorrie has its industry to help keep it
going in the form of Farmatic, a company
manufacturing farm feed milling equip-
ment. It's a remarkable village too as you'll
see later as you head out of town in that it
has a bowling green and a swimming pool,
quite an accomplishment for a village of a
few hundred people. Before you head out
of the village though. take a tour of the
back streets and see some of the
interesting older buildings.
After you've finished head south out of
Gorrie on Cty. Rd. 28 past the bowling
green and swimming pool and take the first
road to your left. It's a gravel road so you'll
have to slow down a little and watch for the
bumps but it's interesting countryside with
gently rolling hills, and attractive farms.
The road takes you right into the next
village on our tour, Fordwich, another
pretty town. Here again there are old shops.
now standing vacant that can stir the
imagination with all the interesting
businesses they could hold. You're going
to want to turn right onto the Cty Rd. 30 to
leave Fordwich but first tour the back
streets and the forked main street. Not only
are there interesting old buildings here,
but some impressive new houses as well.
Likely all three village we've visited so far,
will one day have more such houses as
people discover what pretty places they
are.
We head southeast now on the county
road and soon travel through Kurtzville.
The village had seen a good deal of
construction of modern homes yet has
maintained a strong community spirit.
The road goes on now to Gowanstown at
the corner of highway 23. Located as it is
between Palmerston and Listowel it's
inevitable that this village should have
grown a good deal and new subdivisions
are everywhere.
Turn south (right) onto Highway 23 and
head into Listowel. The north end of
Listowel shows the strong and steady
grown the town has experienced in recent
years. Farm service industries, car
dealerships, the new shopping plaza and
many other businesses have extended the
town's outer reaches far to the north.
Follow Highway 23 through the town
(unless you want to stop for a while to shop
at some of the interesting shops including
an excellent bookstore and several
varieties of restaurants) and stay with it as
it heads south again towards Atwood. It's
prosperous country along here too with
large turkey farms, the Campbell Soup
plant, a small airport and many impressive
farms.
The northern outskirts of Atwood brings
one of the favourite attractions of the area:
The Atwood cheese factory which has a
factory outlet where you can buy many
kinds of cheese directly from the plant.
Atwood itself is a blend of the old
fashioned and the modern including. some
good community recreation facilities.
Through Atwood it's southward again to
a community which is small enough you
might not know about it were it not for the
highway sign marking Newry. Turn right
here on the county road that heads west
toward Brussels. It's relatively flat land
through the next few miles, excellent for
farming. Before you get to Brussels you'll
see a sign pointing to fight and the village
of Ethel, only a mile away. Turn that way
and travell on into the village. There is only
one big thing in the village these days and
that's the Grey Township Central School on
the south edge of town. The school is the
local point of the Grey Home and School
Association which every spring presents a
musical comedy show that draws raves
from the thousands of people who see it.
At the main corner of the village, turn
left and head out of town to the west. is
concession road again, unpaved so you'll
have to reduce speed but the road's in
pretty good condition. After several miles
you will come to Huron County Road 12
just north of Brussels and you can turn and
go north to Highway 86 at Bluevale and
back to Wingham, or cross the country
road, take the interesting Morris township
road west to Belgrave and Highway 4
where you can turn north to Wingham.
Either way. here's hoping you enjoy a
pleasant and safe trip. It can be done as
quickly as about two hours or linger into
the better part of a day.
