Village Squire, 1977-09, Page 28for Wroxeter comes into view then we head
right into the village's business section.
Wroxeter is one of those pretty little
villages that sprang up to make use of the
water power provided by the Maitland. The
cheap power got the villages started but
when railways and highways passed them
by, the villages stagnated. The result is a
feeling of time not touching the village too
much. Many of the old buildings look much
as they did three or four decades ago.
There's a tremendous charm to
Wroxeter. You cross the river near the
large millpond as you enter then go over an
elderly, once ornate bridge. There are
many fine old commercial buildings along
the main street, some of which stand
empty and look like inviting places to set
up small shops. Two small shops that once
decorated the street, The Village Cedar
Box and a shop in the former church just
down the street stand empty, however
perhaps illustrating the difficulty of doing
business in a small, off-highway village.
Tour some of the back streets in the
village and you'll see some fine old homes
and a park operated by the Maitland Vallee
Conservation Authority. The headquarters
of the Authority is located in Wroxeter in
the southwest corner of the village. One fo
the more interesting sights in the village is
the flat-topped houses, large houses that
appear as if someone had forgotten to put a
roof on.
Go,back out the Highway 87 after you've
toured the village and travel on down the
road a couple of miles to Gorrie and turn
down the main street there.
