You don't have to mordant with plants that have a natural chemical of their own like walnuts which have tanning in them. With most of the others you must have mordant or the colors won't take. You don't have to mordant before dyeing. You can put chemicals right in the dye bath. Use stainless steel tubs. The Kerrs have been selling some of the things they have made. They have sold mitts, pillows and purses and have been at craft shows in Seaforth and Lucknow to demonstrate their work. The Kerrs have also been taking a course in spinning at Georgina College in Owen Sound where they were taught by Mrs. Dorothy Kirk, who was teaching spinning before it became popular again. She has been teaching the course in several places throughout the province. At this course, they have spun with all different kinds of fibre including dog hair, alpaca, camel hair, cashmere, goat hair, muskox (the finest Canadian fibre there is), yak, human hair, Japanese silk and flax. In spinning, you can use commercial yarn, natural color yarn or even fabric. Most of the natural dyes work best with silk or wool, according to John. Besides their spinning wheel and wool business, the Kerrs also bottled and sold herbs for awhile at craft shows. At Drumclog Farm Crafts, the Kerrs sell British and Canadian wool. They like the British wool because they can sell some colors that aren't that common in Canadian sheer'. Their farm was originally called Drumclog (after a place in .cotiano) so they have kept the name for their business as well. Here is a recipe John gave for one wool dye. For one ounce of wool use 1!i. tsp. of alum and '/tsp. of cream of tartar. The nostalgia phase seems to be fading but maybe with the old art of spinning renewed, John and Barbara Kerr are helping to bring in a whole new era. ■ ffyousawachild starving to death, would you just stand and watch? Well, tha4 what you're doing. Because of the worst drought in centuries, every day millions of Africans come a little bit closer to starving to death. Please don't just stand by and watch. Send a donation to support UNICEF's emergency relief distribution of thousands of tons of food and medicine in the stricken areas of West Africa and Ethiopia. And please be generous. We don't know how long the drought will last. Or how long the children will. UNICEF Canada (Africa) 443 Mt. Pleasant Road, Toronto Ontario M4S 2L8 VILLAGE SQUIRE/SEPTEMBER 1977, 7.
