Village Squire, 1977-08, Page 12at one time through all Ontario and beyond. There's also old
pictures of things that went on in Wingham's early days, and
there's a picture of Edward Farley, the first settler in
Wingham who came in 1858.
In a glass enclosed case in this room there are many pieces
of beautiful china which has pictures painted on the very edge
of the plate which depict various scenes in Wingham. A
plaque of another old industry in Wingham, the plaque of C.
Lloyd and Sons who manufactured doors in 1888 is also
located in this room.
Off in a little alclove of its own are some pieces of furniture
that belonged to George Allan's grandfather, John Hanna.
These are a loveseat and two old chairs and a clock that's over
100 years old. In the rest of the big room are the first
telephones in Wingham from around 1910 and a 1915 phone
book. There are also the auxiliary parts for these old
telephones.
In a room where the Society would like to have more
paintings by local artists, there are paintings, by G.A. Reid a
famous artist who lived on Lot 33, Con. 13 of East Wawanosh
Township. Reid gave most of his best paintings to the
Department of Education, however. In this room the Society
would like to someday hold a museum art show. There is one
other painting in this room not done by Reid and that was
done by a 93 -year-old resident of Wingham who is no longer
living.
'It was George Allan's birds that got the museum in
Wing am going with money for the renovations coming from
The Heritage and Historical Society. The money was donated
by private citizens.
Mrs. Iris E. Morrey, president of the Society said they are
ft.2ping that they will eventually be able to charge admission
to the museum when they get a few more things. She said
they are planning to have an antique musical room.
Although work on the museum was started in June of last
y- ar it didn't open until June 16 of this year. The museum is
open four afternoons a week or by appointment. The four
afternoons are Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday
but Mrs. Morrey said they would be glad to come and open
the museum in the evening if someone wanted to see it. The
afternoon hours are 2 to 5 p.m.
Official members of the Heritage and Historical Society
are: President, Mrs. Iris Morrey; Vice -President, Ross
Hamilton of CKNX; Secretary, Mr. W.E. Fielding; Treasurer,
Stewart Beatty. Jim Currie does the assessing of the pieces
for their antiquity, Mrs. Wilbur Tiffin is the clerk and John
Patterson is the property chairman. It was Mr. Patterson who
was responsible for getting the renovations started.
In the future, Mrs. Morrey said they hope to set up
historical scenes which they will keep changing all the time.
She said most people are willing to loan their pieces.
"Now people are beginning to realize that pretty soon the
history won't be around any more," she said.
"If we can preserve a little bit of it --in another 10 or 20
years, the young people of Wingham will realize what it was
like," she added.
With special parades and events to celebrate their history,
different communities have found a way of reliving their
history. With a museum, Wingham has found a way of
preserving its.
