Vermont country inns
offer old world charm
Vacationers who like to step backwards
in time will find much to delight them in
Vermont's many country inns.
Often part of the local heritage, the inns
offer an ideal setting for travellers
interested in discovering Vermont's lively
past or exploring its present peaceful
countryside.
Vermont joined the Union in 1791 as the
14th state. First to forbid slavery and to
allow all adult males to vote, Vermont,
alone in New England, felt the sting of a
Confederate invasion in a combination raid
and bank robbery launched against St.
Albans from ostensibly. neutral Canada.
Today, Canadian travellers are assured
of a warm welcome from Vermont's
innkeepers as they journey the 159 -mile
length of the state nestled between the
Connecticut River to the East and Lake
Champlain to the West.
North Hero House is a 22 -room country
inn on North Hero Island in Lake
Champlain. The area's history includes the
capture of Fort Ticonderoga by Ethan Allen
and Benedict Arnold in 1775.
Cove House on the water's edge has
recently been restored for additional
guests. Since 1880 it has been a private
home, a tearoom and has even had a
cobbler's shop in the basement.
Activities near the inn include boating,

water-skiing, sailing, fishing, tennis,
bicycling, golf and horseback riding.
Rabbit Hill Inn, White Village, Lower
Waterford, is a 20 -room country inn on
Route 18 with a marvellous panoramic view
of the Presidential Range of the White
Mountains.
Kedron Valley Inn on Route 106, South
Woodstock, is a 34 -room rustic resort -in
near Mount Ascutney.
There has been an inn at the bend of the
Kedron Brooke dating well back into the last
century.
Chester Inn, Chester, is a 30 -room
village inn on Route 11. One of the first
declarations of independence was made in
the village of Chester in 1774. The citizens
of the community signed a document
bluntly stating "That all the acts of the
British Parliament tending to take away
rights of freedom ought not to be
obeyed."
The many old homes in the village were
built from locally quarried stone in the late
1700 and early 1800s. A surprising number
of them contain secret rooms which were
used to shelter runaway slaves who were
moving north to Canada on the
underground railway.
