DA YTRIPPING
To the source of the Avon and back
Our trip this month is courtesy of Mrs.
Wm. Cooke, R. R. 4, Stratford who will
receive a one-year subscription to Village
Squire magazine for her suggestion.
The heart of Stratford, for many people.
is beautiful Lake Victoria and the
manicured lawns and gardens that
surround it. Lake Victoria is actually, of
course, just a man-made lake by damming
up the Avon River. Mrs. Cooke's trip takes
us to the source of the Avon, through some
interesting historical territory.
The trip starts in the southern part of
Stratford off Erie Street at Lorne Avenue.
For those who don't know the street, it's
one of the major streets off Erie Street and
has its own signal lights. Turn east on
Lorne Ave. (left if you're headed out of the
city, right if you're heading into the city).
You'll drive through the industrial part of
the city. past factories and past the drive-in
movie and a ball park and a golf course.
You'll take a jog outside the city to cross
the railway tracks but don't take the
north -south paved road but keep heading
east.
You're in South Easthope township and
there are several prosperous farms along
the way. A piece down the road is a
five -acre reforested plot which, Mrs. Cooke
tells us, is the lowest point of land in the
