Ave., London.
MONTREAL MAINTENANT is the second
in a series of exchange exhibitions between
London and other artistic centres,
Saskatoon, Montreal and Toronto. These
exhibitions were conceived as an opportun-
ity for visitors to the London Art Gallery to
view and evaluate the work of artists from
other Canadian cities.
This collection of pieces by 12 artists
working in Montreal, who have developed
their current style after 1970, will be at the
London Art Gallery from June 4 to July 3. It
was assembled by Kate McCabe, Assistant
Curator, Touring and Training.
Although the pieces in the exhibition
cannot be categorized as part of a stylistic
school, the artists seem to be working with
similar concerns and the overall effect of
the exhibition is one of visual unity.
The sculptors, Trevor Goring, Roland
Poulin and Claude Mongrain, explore
sculpture as systems of measurements.
Four of the artists use photographic images
-- Suzy Lake and Chris Richmond -- to
document manipulation of the human
body, while Pierre Boogaerts and Bill
Vazan use photographs to illustrate the
establishment of an ordered system, on the
natural elements. The paintings of Betty
Goodwin, John Heward and Miljenko
Horvat are characterized by subdued
colour and surface manipulation of the
canvas.
