Village Squire, 1977-06, Page 28its interests in new theatre developments.
In the 1977 Stratford Festival Workshop
Program, actors, designers, and guest
directors will work on a series of
experiments on the function and
possibilities of the chorus in the theatre.
They will be studying things like Greek
tragedy, Elizabethan drama, the musical
theatre and contempory writers like James
Reaney. These workshops will not usually
be made available to the public that some
exceptions will be made as in the case of a
workshop exercise being shown to invited
audiences on an informal level.
Since 1953 under the direction of Tyrone
Guthrie, Cecil Clarke, Michael Langham,
Jean Gascon, and the present director
Robin Philips, Stratford has produced all
but one of Shakespeare's plays along with
some works of major Canadian writers.
These writers include James Reaney,
Tom Hendry, Michael Ondaatje and Larry
Fineberg. The Festival has also done the
works of Sophocles, Ibsen, Moliere,
Chekhov Sheriden, Brechet, Bechett and
many other great playwrights.
This year the Festival Theatre will be
presenting on the Festival Stage: A
Midsummer Night's Dream, All's Well
'That Ends Well, Richard Ill, Much Ado
About Nothing, As You like it, and on the
Avon Stage: Romeo and Juliet, Ghosts,
Miss Julie, The Guardsman and Hay
Fever.
The Festival productions often go on
tour. They have been in Edinburgh, to New
York, to England's Chichester Festival in
1964 and to Europe in 1973, including
engagements in Copenhagen, Utrecht, The
Hague, Warsaw, Krakow, Moscow and
Leningrad.
In 1974 they went on their first tour of
Australia, performing in Perth, Melbour-
ne, Adelaide and Sydney. In February and
March of 1967, they made their first
coast-to-coast tour of Canada as part of the
country's Centennial celebrations. The
company has since toured annually to
major centres in Canada and the United
States.
