called in as an advisor.
After he had investigated Stratford he
agreed to be associated with the new
project if a closed -in theatre or tent were
constructed, if a revolutionary "open"
stage were built instead of the conventional
proscenium type, and if a star and
experienced theatre personnel were
employed.
A $150.000 budget was approved by the
committee and negotiations were made
with Alec Guinness and Irene Worth to
head the company with Tyrone Guthrie as
the director and Tanya Moiseiwitsch as the
designer.
In October 1952, a non-profit organiz-
ation to be known as the Stratford
Shakespearean Festival Foundation of
Canada was set up with Harrison A.
Showalter as president and A.M. Bell as
vice-president.
The giant tent was pulleddown for the
last time in 1956 and the construction of
somthing permanent began.
The late Right Honourable Vincent
Massey, C.H. then Governor-General of
Canada laid the foundation stone in the
foyer wall of the new Festival Theatre on
January 26, 1957.
Architect Robert Fairfield won the
Massey Gold Medal for Architecture in
1958 for his design.
Inside the Festival still is the stage which
was designed in 1953 by Tanya
Moiseiwitsch and Tyrone Guthrie. The
stage is a modern adaptation of the
