Village Squire, 1977-06, Page 18The Red Pump is open for lunch from 1 to 3 p.m. Dinner is
served from 6 till 10 p.m. Reservations are needed till 10 p.m.
and then the restaurant stays open till one a.m. every night.
The restaurant has two separate dining rooms which
together can seat about 48 people. Outside there is patio
dining with white patio tables and chairs. This arrangement
can seat about 42 people.
Besides the restaurant, Harry and Carlos also run The Red
Pump gift shop on the other side of the street which sells gifts
and antiques.
The Red Pump gift shop used to be a hamburger place
before it was a gift shop but they discovered that nobody was
interested in a hamburger place. They preferred going across
the street to the restaurant, a place that was unique to
Bayfield.
The owners also found that it was too much of a headache
trying to run two4restaurants, so they made the hamburger
place into a shop which sells gifts and antiques.
People wanting to get into the gift shop and finding it
closed should run across the street to the restaurant and ask
Harry to open it for them, he says.
The restaurant has been successful judging by the clientele
they're getting, Harry said.
"Actually most people are surprized once they get their
meal because they don't expect that in this area, Harry said.
"A lot of Americans drive up for the day just to have dinner
here," he said.
Their business is split 50-50 between Americans and
Canadians. Now they're starting to cater a lot more to people
around the town with small luncheon parties.
While Carlos cooks, Harry acts out his role as manager
talking to the people as they come in, making suggestions
about the wine and doing just about anything else but the
cooking.
Ten other people including waiters, waitresses, a bar man,
and kitchen help are employed at the restaurant.
Harry and Carlos have been friends for 12 years. Harry
never really dreamt of opening a restaurant but after finding
