AND GRANDCHILDREN
by Dorothy L. Thornton
The blessed relationship and love that flows in all cultures
between these two magical generations, are often observed
moving in two directions by the generation caught in
between. better known as the children of the former and the
parents of the latter.
Grandparents have qualities of a magician. Who else but a
Grandmother can take time to make doll clothes from a scrap
bag? Who but a Grandfather can make a stubborn tricycle
wheel run smoothly again? The magic of story telling is an art
that only Grandparents have acquired; a certification earned
by experiences, richly fabricated with imagination, patience
and wisdom.
When life looks darkest and most hopeless, Grandparents
always know what to say to help sensitive feelings recover, as
tears are brushed away.
Not all children are fortunate enough to have Grandparents
living near in this age of travel where families live scattered
all over our planet. Attempts have been made at bringing
together the senior groups of citizens who do not have
grandchildren and children who do not have grandparents.
Social workers must feel that there is a necessary relationship
between the two groups when this type of adoption takes
place.
Early Canadian society often had three generations
dwelling under one roof. In many older cultures in the world
today they still live together. The results are a closely knit
family life with great respect and love for each generation's
problems and aspirations.
I grew up with a chance to participate in the best of two
worlds. Our farm had two farm houses. The big white brick
house where my grandparents lived was very close to our
little weather-beaten frame house, where 1 was born and
dwelt with my parents. In fact it was so close, I could easily
throw my ball to Grandfather to catch. as he sat reading on
the open veranda. I was the fourth generation to share in the
close family relations these two houses had enveloped.
The yard between was almost always enclosed by the
spreading branches of the horse chestnut trees, making it
very easy to run, during a summer rain, without getting wet,
from my rope swing to the bench beside Grandfather. If it was
a quiet rain, we sat together and watched the splatter on the
stone stoop. After the splashing rain had washed the foot
scraper clean, it began to run into Grandmother's rose bed. 1
