A farm vacation can be as active or
inactive as the individual vacationer wants.
You can, if you wish, hike, swim, fish or
ride depending on the farm home you
choose. Parents concerned with introduc-
ing their children to the hard realities of a
farmer's life, will find a selection of
working farms where visitors are welcome
to help with the chores. If, however, you
want to do nothing more strenuous than
push your way back and fourth to the table,
that's fine.
Don't plan on dieting, however. One of
the main attractions of this kind of holiday
is the good hearty food, served three times
a day, plus snacks. Consider this typical
day's menu from one Ontariofarm.
Breakfast included cereal, bacon and eggs,
' toast and fresh scones with homemade
jam. For lunch there were sausage rolls,
potatoes, carrots, beans, cole slaw, pickles,
homemade bread, raspberry pie and
chocolate cake. Fried chicken was served at
supper, along with corn -on -the -cob, salad,
and strawberry shortcake with cream and
icecream.
Guest farms and ranches vary from
region to region. In British Columbia or
Alberta, you can stay at real working cattle
ranches. Activities at one at Clearwater
Lake include swimming, boating, riding,
hikes, hayrides, pack trips and trail rides.
In Quebec and Ontario, expect to find
dairy and mixed farms or orchards.. For
example, there's a dairy farm just a few
miles from Stratford. Visitors can hunt,
hike in the woods, fish swim or golf at a
nearby course. ' Family members will
babysit if desired.
In the Atlantic provinces, especially
Prince Edward Island, your farm home will
probably be close to beaches and fishing.
In the midwest provinces of Manitoba and
Saskatchewan you are most likely to visit a
grain farm. One in Saskatchewan has 800
acres of wheat and other crops plus cattle,
a horse, a pony, pets, a swimming pool and
play equipment.
In most cases, guests are welcome, if
they wish, to join in family living ---eating,
playing and working together with their
hosts. It is not uncommon for them to
choose to do such chores as clearing the
table ant washing dishes. They are also
expected, of course, to respect the hours
and schedules kept by their hosts.
Some vacationers select farms for their
proximity to other facilities or events.
Antique hunters often go to areas where
they can expect to find the treasurers they
seek. Others choose farms near places like
Stratford, so they can attend the Stratford
Festival, or Niagara -on -the -Lake for the
Shaw Festival. Young children are usually
most attracted by the animals and pets and
the freedom to climb trees, explore woods.
fish and just generally enjoy the outdoors,
minus the usual big city restrictions.
Teenagers are keen on riding horses,
swimming and young people's social
activities.
