To most of us, the idea of opening a new clothing store
without having any lengthy experience in the business would
be at least a little scary. For Rosemary Davidson, however. it
appears to have gone as smooth as silk.
The young Listowel native is approaching the first
anniversary of the opening of her shop The Clothes Closet just
off the Square in Goderich but approaches the business like a
polished veteran. Yet aside from a long-time desire to do
something like run a smart clothing store she has nothing but
a little experience working in a Kincardine clothing shop to
give her experience. Her enjoyment of fashionable clothes,
acquired when she was 12 or 13 when she discovered, she
recalls, that clothing meant so much to a person's
(particularly a woman's) life, has helped her. She was a
part-time child model at one time.
She decided to go ahead with the idea of a smart shop for
the women who want the latest styles early last year. She and
her electrical contractor husband live at Point Clark on Lake
Huron and she began to look around for a place nearby she
thought needed such a shop. She chose Goderich and began
looking for a suitable location. Eventually the couple bought
the former Eaton's building on North Street and began
renovating it to suit the style they wanted for the shop. The
shop is lined with tongue -and -groove pine boards and many
of the fixtures are also of pine giving the room a warm feeling.
It is bright and airy from the large front window.
From the time she decided to go ahead with opening a shop
to the time they bought the building was a relatively short
period, she remembers and from then on in "everything fell
