A Losing Battle
IRENE McBRIDE
Homemaking is ruining my self image.
I've just about decided to move, lock, stock
and barrel, into a tent.
Visitors always seem to arrive when
things look their worst -and that includes
me! Now I spray furniture wax around,
instead of air freshener, as soon as the
doorbell rings. That way, on smelling the
wax, the visitors will think I've been busy
polishing!
One day last summer I turned on the fan
to cool the house and discovered clumps of
dog fur jumping around like tumbleweed.
It made me feel like putting on a cowboy
hat, lassoing the dog and muttering about,
"Them thar dust storms."
1 remember hearing in church that we all
come from dust. I just hope that all the
dusty souls lying on top of my furniture
don't materialize at the same time; my life
savings would have to be swapped for
disposable diapers!
All my life 1 have equated sweeping dirt
under the rug with the lazy homemaker, so
I never did it; no matter how great the
temptation. Then I discovered braided
rugs, and presto, the dirt goes right
through. Instant clean!
It always flattens my spirits when, on
entering the home of a friend, the living
room presents a perfect picture; dustless,
ash trays sparkling and not a speck of lint
anywhere. Newspapers where they should
be, in the rack, and not spread all over
floors and furniture. It is wonderful when,
on discarding my coat in a bedroom, I see
dressing table and assorted tops with a
layer of dust. Then, and only then, does my
feeling of animosity fall away. She's
fallible, I think to myself and I feel a
kinship, a warmth towards my friend.
Perfection we can get on television but,
please, not in real life!
With three people in the house being
addicted to tobacco I have watched the
vibrant colours of carpets, curtains and
furnishings slowly turn to drab beiges and
browns. Now, when I get a sun tan and go
indoors I instantly blend in with the decor.
