Penny's husband Bill welded the Penny Farthing bicycle
which decorates the outside of the store.
think perhaps the name was a wise choice under the
circumstances.
Finally, Penny recalls, she woke up in the middle of the
night with the name Penny Farthing going through her head.
She woke Bill to ask him what he thought of the name.
Though in the middle of the night Bill was understandably
unenthusiastic, by the next morning he agreed it was a good
name. He helped Penny a good deal in getting the shop set up
including welding together the realistic penny farthing
bicycle which graces the front of the store.
The name is subtitled Books and Things on all the
advertising done for the shop because Penny likes to have
more than just books in her store. She has some wooden toys
for children and hopes to get into a line of safe, educational
type toys. In addition there is a room at the rear of the store
where, when it is renovated, she hopes to open a health
corner, not only with foods but soaps and other products.
The variety helps to smooth out the humps and hollows in
the business, she says. Books, for instance, sell well at
Christmas but sales at some times of the year are slow.
During those times the other gift -ware in the store helps pick
