Village Squire, 1977-01, Page 33other productions of Shakespeare: As You
Like It, Much Ado About Nothing, Romeo
and Juliet and Richard II, the last two of
which will be performed by the Young
Company at the Avon Theatre. Strind-
berg's Miss Julie, Molnar's The Guards-
man and a special end -of -Season product-
ion of Noel Coward's Hay Fever will also be
seen on the Avon Stage.
This will be the third production of
Richard III to be done at Stratford,
following the inaugural Season presenta-
tion which had Sir Alec Guinness in the
title role and a second production in 1967
starring Alan Bates.
All's Well That Ends Well has not been
seen on the Festival stage since the 1953
production which again featured Sir Alec
and Irene Worth.
Two of Shakespeare's most delightful
comedies, As You Like It and Much• Ado
About Nothing are ever -popular works,
loved for their charm, vitality and the
beauty of the language in which the poet
celebrates young love and youthful lovers.
Directly opposite on the dramatic
spectrum are Romeo and Juliet, the
archetypal story of star-crossed lovers, and
Miss Julie, Strindberg's haunting portrait
of .a woman caught in a love -hate
relationship destined to destroy her.
The contrast between the two kings of
British history depicted in Richard II and
Richard 111 could not be more complete. A
man who comes too late to the
understanding of kingship, Richard II is a
troubled and troubling figure, fascinating
in his complexity. The steel -willed evil of
Richard III makes this unforgettable
protrait of man without conscience,
compelling in its intensity and disturbing
in its insights into human nature at its
ugliest.
The Guardsman was written in the early
1900's by a Budapest -born dramatist
whose other plays include Liliom, which
inspired Rodgers and Hammerstein's
Carousel. A comedy about a husband who
sets out to trap his wife in an infidelity and
instead succeeds only in trapping himself
in his own suspicions, it is witty,
light-hearted and pointed in its comments
on deception between the sexes.
Stratford's famous trumpets have
sounded on 24 Season first nights. When
they sound for the 25th year, the fanfare
will herald the start of perhaps the most
exciting and entertaining summer yet, an
anniversary Season with Shakespeare,
Strindberg, Molnar and Coward, four
guests of honour who guarantee a
celebration to remember.
In honour of its first quarter century, the
Festival will also present a special
commemorative presentation on the
Festival stage early in the Season. Details
of this presentation and of production and
casting for the above works will be
announced at a later date.
