Nobody could accuse former Listowel
Mayor David Hay of being in politics for
the money.
The Mayor, who retired at the end of
1976, donated his entire $2500 per year
salary back to the community through
donations to various service organizations.
Gary Binder of RR 2, Lucknow might be
the founder of a men's lib organization.
Just as Gloria Steinham and others pointed
out many of the injustices of the present
state of affairs toward women, the
28 -year-old Binder is pointing out how
unfair things can be for men. When his
wife desserted him and his three children
in 1975 Binder was left with the same kind
of problems more frequently encountered
by abandoned wives: how to give children
proper care and still earn a living. Women
in such a situation, however get assistance
from the government. For a father to get
such assistance, he must be physically or
mentally unfit for work. Otherwise he's
supposed to hire a babysitter or call in the
"county homemaker and go out to work.
Binder says that on the wage he can earn
he couldn't afford the babysitter and the
homemaker would provide only meals for
the children. He feels he has to be at home
with his children to give them proper care.
He got some welfare assistance but when
that was cut off he began selling off
possessions to make ends meet. Mean-
while he continues to fight what he
considers a bias against men.
Twenty years of public service for
Tuckersmith township reeve Elgin Thomp-
son began with a coin flip. Thompson, who
retired at the end of 1976 recalls that a
public nomination meeting 20 years ago at
which four men were after two available
positions. There weren't enough people at
the meeting to hold nominations so the four
men agreed to flip a coin to see which of
them would win the spots by acclamation.
Thompson was among them. He's been
ready to retire now for six years but no one
wanted the job of reeve so he held on until
this past year.
January 13 this year will mark a big date
for a young Stratford born actress when
she makes her first appearance in a play in
New York city. Pam Rogers grew up in a
town famous for its theatre and fittingly
enough it will be Shakespeare's Twelfth
Night that gives her her first chance in the
big city. She studied at the National
Theatre School in Montreal and began her
professional career in Stratford in
Pinocchio at the Festival's Third Stage in
1972 and in 1974 was in Michael Bawtree's
production of Love's Labours Lost. She's
also been with the Shaw Festival and with
the Citidel Theatre in Edmonton.
