Joop.
When Jan Capel looked up with his glasses on, it seemed
that he could see too clearly the faces turned toward him.
their many faces listening and still. He took his glasses off
because they hurt his eyes. Imm diately their voices rose in
talking and their were questioni questionand answers and steaming
pots of potatoes and cabbage on the table. He shook hands
v.ith Gunter Berg, feeling now that he had missed that
formality on the doorstep, and Bas began to spit out tangled
questions about his brother Dirk and their brother Joop. The
pans went past them and in the clatter of spoons and forks the
boy translated the answers as best he could.
When the meal was over Gunter and the oldest son Wim.
‘...ho had just come home. began a stumbling, multilingual
game of poker. and the girls cleared the table and gathered
up their mending. The father alone did not leave his place at
the table. From the sideboard he pulled his pipe and his
pouch of tobacco. In spite of the many people in the room it
was very, quiet. His wife worked at the mending, from the
kitchen he could hear the sound of dishes being washed, the
boys were concentrating on the card game. Stuffing his pipe
he looked at Bas. who stood above the game. as if he could not
quite make up his mind to get interested in it.
"Bas." Capel said. and the boy was quickly beside him.
v. ait in for what he would say. Across the room he saw Tinike
pause in the middle of a mending lesson.
"Bas."
"Ja Maneer?" •
"You better go home now and tell your father about Dirk.

Then he added the same speech he made every Saturday

bright and early on Monday morning. ja?"
"Ja Maneer." Bas said, and was halfway to the door before
the v. ords were out of his mouth. Capel watched him from his
chair at the head of the table, and across the room saw Tinike
smile while she bent her head over the mending again.
