His wife worked at the mending, from the kitchen he could hear the sound of dishes being washed, the boys were concentrating on the card game. Stuffing his pipe he looked at Bas. who stood above the game. as if he could not quite make up his mind to get interested in it. "Bas." Capel said. and the boy was quickly beside him. v. ait in for what he would say. Across the room he saw Tinike pause in the middle of a mending lesson. "Bas." "Ja Maneer?" • "You better go home now and tell your father about Dirk. Take Kees' bicycle, that will be faster." Then he added the same speech he made every Saturday night. as he lit his pipe and Bas smiled. "And you be back bright and early on Monday morning. ja?" "Ja Maneer." Bas said, and was halfway to the door before the v. ords were out of his mouth. Capel watched him from his chair at the head of the table, and across the room saw Tinike smile while she bent her head over the mending again.
