THE ARBOR 43 Albert Street Clinton, Ont. 482-3876 UP FRONT In cold winter weather like we've been suffering through in snowbelt country lately, one of the most comfortable places used to be the railway station waiting room in your home town where the big pot-bellied stove belched heat enough to thaw out the most frozen passenger after a long sleighride in from the country. Those are the kind of memories that Elizabeth A. Willmot has brought back to many with her book "Meet me at the Station" which was published by Gage Publishing this past fall. The book is full of pictures of old railway stations, many from Western Ontario. It features stations at Goderich, Clinton, Blyth, St. Mary's, Kincardine, Palmerston, Petersburg as well as many from the area north of Toronto. Exploring the railroad heritage a little further we look this month at the Butter and Eggs Special, an unassuming little railway that tied Western Ontario together on a north -south route for many years and helped cement London as a major trading centre for the prosperous farming country to the north. Our thanks for assistance in researching this article to Mrs. Jack Legg Sr. of Birr for providing an article by Jennie Roycraft Lewis on the railway and to the Clinton News -Record. We'll also take a look at what we turn our back on in Winter: the beach. It may not have the pretty girls to look at in January, but there are still some interesting sights. We have the usual dining and entertainment information and a flock of articles by area writers for your winter night reading. COVER: The old Blyth Station of the now defunct Butter and Eggs Special of the C.N.R. is featured in the book Meet Me at the Station, by Elizabeth Wilimot.
