Village Squire, 1976-11, Page 32Van Egmond, a veteran of the European wars in
Napoleon's army agreed to lead the rag -tag band of untrained
farmers, some of whom were equipped with nothing but
pitchforks for weapons. 'His attempts went for naught.
however, as the irrepressible Mackenzie and other leaders
didn't wait long enough to get things organized and the
rebellion was put down at Montgomery's tavern north of
Toronto. almost before it began.
While the history books deal mostly with Mackenzie, who
escaped to the U.S. and was later pardoned to return to
Toronto, the really tragic hero of the whole affair was Van
Egmond. The old soldier was captured and later died in
prison, likely from pneumonia caught in the damp prison.
Two others, Sam Lount and Peter Matthews went to the
gallows on April 12. 1838.
Many of the familiar faces of the Passe Muraille troupe,
Miles Potter, David Fox and Eric Petterson among them. will
not be in this reincarnation of the original. Yet their work, the
work they did in researching and creating the characters will
still be on display. They have shown a genious for such work
in the past and hopefully their characters will come to life as
well in the hands of a new cast.
See around town for details of where and when the play will
be performed.
