Village Squire, 1976-11, Page 29Lawrence wrote a piece at the front of the book saying that the magazine needed a "Kansas City Milkman", the mythical common man reader who served as a guide for many years for the United Press International writers who were supposed to write to his level. Lawrence said that such a common reader was needed for his magazine so it could define its audience. There were some articles in this issue for the new homesteader such as one on the renaissance of wood heat, a guide to maple syrup lovers to tell them which trees to tap, a defence of the common egg in the battle against propaganda that it has too much cholestrol, tips on making teas from weeds and tips on choosing a dairy goat. But the emphasis of the magazine seemed to be farther afield this time with stories on the Greenpeace foundation and its fight to save the seals; on horse -pulling in Quebec;- on bluegrass music and "orgasmic gardening". Don't ask for an explanation, we didn't read the article. Quality of writing in the magazine is very good and the graphics generally good. The magazine features a fully -coloured cover and a paper quality inside which is slightly better than that of Village Squire, but not up to the standards of the big-time magazines. The magazine costs $1 per issue or $6 per year and is centred in the eastern Ontario village of Camden East. The one reservation is in how long the magazine can survive. A magazine of the kind must cost over $1.00 per copy to produce and mail and the editor says in the second issue that more than 40,000 copies of that issue were being printed. That means advertis- ing has to pay the way and so far it seems to be pretty skimpy. Still, if you're interested in this kind of magazine, $6 seems a small risk to keeping it going.
