Village Squire, 1976-11, Page 20me about that mighty river. I ran home very fast for fear I'd
forget the magic sound of those letters. My parents and
Grandparents were always amused at my bubbling tales
about Dr. Mary and her wide world of Knowledge.
Summer days pass quickly but happy. fun -filled ones just
speed away like snow in a hot sun. All too soon September
came. the days grew shorter and chilly. I wore a jacket to help
her rake leaves and wrap the trunks of the shrubs. Then one
sad day she summoned my Father to take her to the station to
return to Washington. I never went on this trip for it was
usually before daylight before I was up and anyway I felt too
sad to see her leave. I usually moped for a few days and took
to following my Grandfather around again and pestered him
with questions. Several times through the years my brother
and I received picture books and often a roll of interesting
magazine pictures from her. These I cherished as I begged to
have them read.
The seasons changed and the years went by. I started to
school in the same little rural stone building where my
Grandfather, Father and Dr. Mary had all gone too. I was
in school when the glorious day of her arrival came and could
hardly concentrate on school work when I thought about
meeting the train that evening. Now I had school work and
note books to show her. I could read the books she brought
me. Our summers were better than ever. I had a new baby
brother, to help mind and sometimes I pulled him along in the
wagon. when I went through the fields to the other side of the
orchard. I still had many days alone with my beloved Dr.
Mary and I was growing up. When she returned to
Washington, I always promised her I'd help Aunt Annie and
Uncle Bill as they were growing old. 1 could write letters now
and Dr. Mary received her share. She always answered with
such delightful manuscripts, after first correcting my
grammar. I didn't mind and always tried to do better and she
never ceased telling me how much better my letters were
getting.
Our relationship grew as the years passed by. Another
brother and young sister joined our family and they too
