The Baroque Strings of Vancouver is a
unique chamber ensemble which specializes,
as its name implies, in music of the baroque
period. Its 14 members are musicians with
the Vancouver Symphony who play under
•concertmaster, Norman Nelson. Mr. Nelson,
with two other members of the Symphony,
founded the Baroque Strings 10 years ago.
Previously, the same three men had also been
founding members of the famous Academy of
St. Martin -in -the -Fields in London, England.
The major Vancouver performance of the
Baroque Strings will be Oct. 3 at the
Vancouver East Cultural Centre, when the
ensemble will play Vivaldi's Seasons. The
group is remarkable for its loyalty to the
baroque repertoire but it now also includes
Canadian strings works such as Pierre
Mercure's Divertissements.
Winnipeg makes much of the fact it is the
geographic centre of North. America.
Culturally speaking, it is also right in the
middle of things.
The Manitoba capital has the Royal
Winnipeg Ballet, the Winnipeg Symphony
Orchestra, the Manitoba Opera Company and
the Contemporary Dancers. All have achieved
recognitionbut if one had to be singled out, it
would be the Royal Winnipeg Ballet. This
group, formed in 1938 by two British ballet
teachers, has performed in 25 countries and
374 cities. It has won two gold medals at the
Paris International Dance Festival and its
repertoire includes 80 original ballets.
The RWB has a reputation for being young
and innovative. It has never hesitated to try
something new. The company has performed
such original ballets as Rose La Tulippe,
based on a Canadian theme, and Ecstasy of
Rita Jo, to mark the centennial of two Indian
treaties. Last year, the RWB performed, in
unique fashion, with a Canadian rock band
called Lighthouse. The 1976-77 season opens
Oct. 6 and closes April 17.
The 74th season of L'Orchestre Symphoni-
que de Quebec (Quebec City) starts Oct. 5

Concerto No. 2 and Brahm's Symphony No. 2.

Series and five in the Invitation Series.
