The Montreal Symphony Orchestra, under
Music Director Rafael Fruhbeck de Burgos,
plays from September till May and it too has
prominent names on its program. Among
them are Conductor Franz -Paul Decker,
flutist Jean-Pierre Rampal, violinist Ida
Haendel and pianist. Philippe Entremont.
This coming season, the MSO will give 26
concerts. It will present 300 artists aqd 300
years of musical heritage, from Vivaldi's
Guitar Concerto to Morel's L'Etoile Noire.
Montreal's Les Grands Ballets Canadiens
will present several performances of Swan
Lake, The Nutcracker and the company's own
The Greatest Hits.
The Royal Winnipeg Ballet and the Dutch
National Ballet will also dance in Montreal
this coming season while Ballet Cologne will
perform The Ragtime Dance Company set to
Scott Joplin's infectious ragtime rhythms.
Fresh from its success at Venice last year,
Les 13allets-Jazz (Montreal) continues to
impress.audiences with its modern approach
to an old art. Its new ballet, Fleur de Lit, tells
the story of Quebec from its beginnings to the
year 2,000. The music is by Claude Leveillee
and choreography by Eva von Gencsy:
L'Opera du Quebec (Montreal) always has
a varied program and the McGill Chamber
Orchestra has a far-reaching reputation.
Canada's second-largest city, Toronto, is
another hub 'of cultural activities. Modern
hotels, fine shopping opportunities and the
CN Tower, highest free-standing structure in
the world, make it a good base from which to
explore the opera, symphony and ballet.
Now entering its 55th season, the Toronto
Symphony will give about 100 concerts,
including performances at Carnegie Hall,
New York, and the Kennedy Centre,
Washington, D.C.
Music Director Andrew Davis and Resident
Conductor Victor Feldbrill will handle most of
these concerts and Isaac Stern,. Maureen
Forrester, Anton Kuerti and Rudolf Serkin
are among the guest soloists. All regular
concerts are given at Massey Hall,
acoustically one of the finest concert halls in
the world.
And there is always variety with the TSO
• from Wagner's Preludes and opera overtures
to Fall Fair and The Stars and Stripes
Forever. The Symphony's long history has
been one of success having played with or for
such greats as Stravinsky, Chaliapin, Gigli,
Heifetz, Beecham, Enesco, Fiedler and
Iturbi. It has the largest number of
subscribers in Canada and an estimated one
million people hear the orchestra each year.
The National Ballet of Canada (Toronto)
celebrates its 25th anniversary this year with
a new artistic director and five new
productions. The company will perform
Romeo and Juliet, Giselle, Swan Lake, The
Sleeping Beauty, La Sylphide, Monument for
a Dead Boy, Four Schumann Pieces, La-Fille
Mal Gardee, Coppelia and Nutcracker. After
performances in Montreal, as part of the
cultural program of the Olympic Games, and
its annual summer engagement 'at. the
Metropolitan Opera House, the National
Ballet tours the Atlantic provinces and
Quebec.
The Toronto-based Canadian Opera Com-
pany presents 25 performances during the
coming season, from Sept. 24 to Oct. 16
