Fall a time for music.
BY CLAUDE LEMIEUX
Summer's end in Canada marks the
beginning of a new season of cultural treats.
Each large city has its symphony orchestra
and there is first-class theatre everywhere.
Canada's ballet companies draw crowds
and compliments all over the world, and some
of the world's greatest opera stars perform on
Canadian stages.
From coast-to-coast the country vibrates
with the exuberance of talented and colorful
musicians. Visiting businessmen, convention -
goers and just plain tourists, as well as
residents, enjoy their offerings.
Symphony orchestras, ballets and opera
companies play in their home towns and make
guest appearances across the country, as well
as abroad, while leading performers from
other nations return the compliment and play
for Canadians and their guests.
Ottawa's National Arts Centre is consider-
ed one of the finest performing arts buildings
anywhere.
It was built in 1969 and boasts the
second-largest opera stage in North America.
Its stage citain weighs 3.5 tons and had to be
woven in Japan because no loom on this
continent could handle it.
It is in this setting that the National Arts
Centre Orchestra performs under the baton of
Conductor Mario Bernardi.
The 46 -piece orchestra's 1976-77 season
starts Sept. 30 and ends in May. Most
concerts will be under Maestro Bernardi, but
the list of guest conductors includes such
impressive names as Sergiu Comissiona of
the Baltimore Symphony, Alexander Gibson
of the Scottish National Orchestra, Zubin
Mehta of the Israel Philharmonic and Vaclav
Neumann of the Czech Philharmonic.
The National Arts Centre overlooks the
Rideau Canal, site of what is believed to be
the longest skating rink in the world, in the
centre of Canada's capital.
Symphony, ballet and opera also delight
audiences in Canada's largest city, Montreal.
Most major performances are held in the
magnificent Place des Arts which you can
reach from most large hotels without having
to step outside.
Montreal is proud of its underground city, a
network of hotel -business complexes conven-
iently connected by shop -lined passageways
or by the smooth running subway, Le Metro.
