EVOLUTION OF A BUREAUCRAT WITH A COLD
He largely coughs, and, with impressive sweeep
Of jewelled hand, he makes a vigorous arc
(That represents a Circle, small but deep,
Of which he is a most important part)
To reach his kerchief, monogramed in silk,
That he shakes out so all around may note
The press and quality; and then he blows,
With due solemnity, a runny nose.
And someone present quietly recalls
When that big man was eight, and when he coughed
And sniffled, with that same impressive sweep
Wiped his wet nose upon his shirt sleeve soft.
