Village Squire, 1976-08, Page 18relaxed in all his bones and prepared for a nap. These two gods of
his universe would no doubt engage in conversation. Hopefully it
would last for some time.
"Morning John."
"Morning Thomas, any news today. I see you have the mail?'"
"Yes there's news John...would you know anything about
this?" Tom handed over the letter.
John read it carefully his lips moving with every syllable. He
looked up with satisfaction.
"Yes, Thomas, indeed I do. I'm glad you looked after the affair
so well. Martha and I complained about it. We simply had to stop
this ungodly foolishness. When the wind was right we could hear
the boys shouting and when Martha looked through the field
glasses she could see that some of them wore no pants.
"Well, that was too bad. I'm sure it would be quite a shock to
Martha at her age and having been more or less sheltered like.
She should have turned the glass around and looked out the small
end. Are you sure you did the right thing John? The boys were
just having a bit of fun?"
"Chasing around on the Lord's day...half naked. You call that
a bit of fun Thomas? I tell you God will not be mocked and we his
servants intend to see that he is not. I fear you are a weak vessel
Thomas. Take care the Devil may be reaching for you."'
Tom spat out his quid of tobacco and looked away. Something
is wrong here he thought. Could it be that the Devil was stirring
the fire under the pot of human affairs, hurrying it to a boil while
many Johns and Marthas sat on the lid?
' "John, you and I and Martha and a good many other folks may
be in for a lot of shocks. The Devil could be reaching for a good
many of us. But that's as may be...We see things different ways
and who is to know what is right?"
Over the rows of turnips there hung a haze of dust and on the
east a cloud was climbing black and threatening.
There should not be a thunder storm at this hour of the
morning nor should it come from the east. A low rumble came
from the cloud. There was a feeling of unreality. The sureness of
existence hung suspended.
Thousands of miles away and half a day earlier the gray legions
had crossed the Belgian border. Far back in the Fatherland they
were on the move pressing mindlessly forward.
The world shuddered. The Devil was indeed reaching.
