Village Squire, 1976-08, Page 3This month There seems something very tragic when a young artist dies, a feeling of a terrible waste. Robert E. Laidlaw, was not a young man in years but as an artist, he was still very young. As a frequent contributer of short stories and nostalgic pieces -on growing up in western Ontario more than a half century ago he seemed to have just discovered a skill for writing at an age most people just sit and rock. So the news of his death early this month brought a great saddness to us here at the Village Squire, especially since he had delivered his last article to us only days before he entered hospital for the surgery from which he never recovered. He had so many good ideas in his head waiting to get out to the rest of us...it's indeed a shame -he couldn't have ben granted a few more years, for our sake. Mr. Laidlaw's The Swimming Hole is our tribute to him in this issue. Follow up The continuing saga of the two newspaper towns is still running, but with an ever-changing cast Two months ago we tolsd the story of three towns, Exeter, Kincardine and Port Elgin where the rivallry of two newspapers was making it lively for readers. Last month we reported that tIxeter was back to being a one newspaper town with the Independent News being purchased by the older Times -Advocate. This month it's Mitchell that's a two -paper town with the two largest area publishers Signal -Star Publishing of Goderich and Eddy Publications of St. running, but with an ever-changing cast. Two months ago we told battling for market supremacy. Eddy brothers have created the new Mitchell Times and Signal -Star has purchased the old Advocate from Wanda Mounteer. It's an interesting battle Iwe'II be watching in the coming months.
