THEATRE
STRATFORD FESTIVAL: Continuing on the
Festival Stage
MERCHANT OF VENICE: A beautiful
heiress trapped by her dead father's will, a
stock figure of comedy bursting the bonds, of
his expected role in the action and growing in
stature to tragic proportions, a multifaceted
friendship between an older and a younger
man, powerful courtroom drama pivoting on
the twin themes of justice and mercy...of
these elements Shakespeare has fashioned a
play for all ages. July 13, 16 (matinee), 18, 21
(matinee), 27, 30, Aug. 4, Aug. 7 (matinee).
MEASURE FOR MEASURE: Robin Phillips'
acclaimed production return, tor a second
consecutive year at the Festival, July 14
(matinee), 16, 22, 25, 28, 31, Aug. 3, 6.
ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA: The classic
love affair between the Roman general and
the Egyptian Queen. Continuing through July
14, 17, 21, 24, 29, Aug. 1, 4 (matinee), 7.
THE WAY OF THE WORLD: A much -admir-
ed philanderer traps friend and foe alike in a
series of romantic entanglements, all to
further his own cause with the woman he
loves. Plays July 15, 17 (matinee), 20, 23, 28
(matinee), 31 (matinee), Aug. 5, 8.
A number of eminent musicians will be
performing at weekly Monday evening
concerts on the Festival Stage. Show time is
8:30 p.m. Cleo Laine and John Dankworth
will appear July 12; Chuck Mangione on July
19; The preservation Hall Jazz Band our J my
26; Murray McLaughlin on August 2; Odetta
on August 9.
On the Avon Stage:
EVE: Opening July 14 at the Avon Theatre,
Eve contains a common theme, but with a
new twist. The protangonist searches for her
identity, but in this case she is a 65 -year-old
woman who rejects her middle-class values
and embarks on a journey to understand
herself. Also playing July 18 (matinee), 24
(matinee), 27, 31, Aug. 7.
THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST:
Last year's comedy hit at the Third Stage is
given the full treatment this year at the Avon
with William Hutt again as Lady Bracknell.
Performances on July 15, 17, 21, 24, 29,
August 1 (matinee), 4 (matinee), 8 (matinee).
HAMLET: Shakespeare's compelling tragedy
in a production that has the Festival's Young
Company augmented by two Hamlets and two
Gertrudes, appearing in alternate perform-
ances. Playing July 16, 20, 22, 25 (matinee),
28, 30' Aug. 3, 4, 6.

THE TEMPEST: A magical romance hailed
by many as the crowning achievement of
Shakespeare's life as a poet. Starring William
Hutt and Pat Galloway, performances are on
July 17 (matinee), 21 (matinee), 23, 28
(matinee), 31 (matinee), Aug. 5, 7 (matinee).
HURON COUNTRY PLAYHOUSE, Grand
Bend
IRMA LA DOUCE: Opening July 14 at the
Playhouse, this French musical comedy by
Alexandre Breffort and Marguerite Monnot
concerns the repercussions that occur when
Irma gives up her "profession' for true love.
Plays July 14-17.
THE MUMBERLY INHERITANCE: This
melodrama by Canadian Warren Graves is
.played for thrills - and laughs. Performances
through July 21 - 24.
THE BOYFRIEND: A spoof of the '20's by
Sandy Wilson concerning the antics at
Madame Dubonnet's French Riviera finishing
school. Good family entertainment. Playing
July 28-31.
WALTZ OF THE TOREADORS: Jean
Anouilh's farce presents a blusting retired
army officer who examines his conquests both
on the battlefield and elsewhere. Plays Aug.
4-7
BLYTH SUMMER FESTIVAL:
THE BLOOD IS STRONG: A new musical
version of Lister Sinclair's comedy about the
joys and heartbreaks of early pioneer life in
Canada rises above mere comedy to become
an involving and emotional work. "First-rate
theatre" (The London Free Press). Perform-
ances on July 13, 15, 21, 23, Aug. 5.
HOW I MET MY HUSBAND: A gentle
comedy about a young girl's infatuation with
a pilot, which has also won plaudits from
critics. Based on a short story by Wingham
native Alice Munro. Playing July 14, 16, 20,
24, 28.
MOSTLY IN CLOVER: The hit of last
summer's festival has been revived by
popular request for four performances. . An
original adaptation by Steven Thorne and
Janes Roy from the works of Harry J. Boyle
(an areo native). this year's production
features new music. The four performances
will be July 17, 22, 30, Aug. 7.
SHAPE: An orifinal Country -and -Western
musical comedy about the Olympics by
Festival actor Jim Schaeffer will highlight
both acting and athletic abilities. Opening
July 27 and also playing July 29, 31, Aug. 3,
4, and 6.
TOM KNEEBONE AND DINAH CHRISTIE,
TOGETHER AGAIN: Two of Canada's best
and best known revue performers team up
again, in a summer -long run at The Church
Restaurant, Stratford. The salute to such
people as Cole Porter and Noel ,Coward is
performed Tuesday through Sunday until
Sept. 26.
TWO SCORE AND MORE: Cabaret Theatre
at the Victorian Inn, Stratford.
IN SEARCH OF A WOMAN: Yound company
of four actresses explores the roles of women
in literature. Showing July 15-17 at Centre
Stage, London. Abbrieviated lunch time
performances.
