Village Squire, 1976-06, Page 11But of course what is most important is
on the stage. This year there will be four
plays instead of two. Following the success
of the locally based play Mostly In Clover
last year, the Festival adopted the theme of
producing Canadian plays that have as
much connection, with' the area as possible.
All four plays have that kind of connection.
Of course Harry Boyle's memories of
growing up near Blyth are back again this
year as Mostly in Clover returns by popular
demand. The show is being reworked with
a larger cast and more music this year. It
was scheduled for only four performances
but preseason ticket demand was so lively
that additional performances seem likely to
be added.
The Festival opens July 3 with the first
production of The Blood is Strong. The
Blyth version of this comedy by Lister
Sinclair, former vice-president of C.B.C.,
is a musical.comedy. Though set in Nova
Scotia originally, its theme, the hardships
of Scottish settlers surviving in pioneer
Canada, could just as well have taken place
in Huron County.
The second opening will be How I Met
My Husband. There's no ambiguity about
the local connection here. Alice Munro, the
author, grew up near Wingham and local
references are plentiful> Ms. Munro wrote
the play originally for C.B.C. television and
it's being reworked for the stage. It's a
warm and funny story and unlike another
famous Munro play on C.B.C., is entirely
family -type entertainment.
The fourth production this year is a new
musical comedy by Jim Schaeffer, actor,
director, and writer, who is familiar to
Jim Schaefer and Ron Swartz in a hilarious
scene from Mostly in Clover.
Festival audiences from his work on stage
in Mostly in Clover and The Mousetrap last
season. The show is called Shape, and is a
salute to Olympic year. It tells the story of a
young boy who goes to the Olympics.
The season this year has been expanded
from four weeks to six. Artistic Director,
James Roy, has continued his goal of
presenting entertainment for the whole
family andthe ticket prices are the bargain
of the area: single adult seat prices S3. with
discounts for senior citizens and children
and special voucher books available for
further savings.
There will also be other concerts and
attractions throughout the summer.
