trees left in this part of Ontario.
for such a proud -looking tree.
N9t. aII the elms were cut. Here and there
there are still some skeletons left behind,
standing starkly against the sky.
And, thankfully, here and there are still the
odd elm alive. The trees look almost like
strangers now, standing lonely in a field. No
one knows why they were left untouched
while their neighbours fell. Perhaps some
strange immunity to the disease that no
one has yet been able to isolate; perhaps just
a brief reprieve until it too succumbs.
We went fora walk the other day, wife,
kids and I, back by the river near our little
farm. There growing by the river bank,
perhaps from seeds flushed down the river
during a spring flood, was a grove of young
elm trees. I had to explain to the children
what they were and show them what the
leaves looked like. They'd never heard of elm
trees before. I hope, somehow, those young
elms survive so•they'll know what elms look
like to be able to show their own children.
