Village Squire, 1976-05, Page 13And gone is the tree that gave youngsters in
our neighbourhood a lot of hours of pleasure.
An old elm just up the road from us had a
strange growth of fungus about 30 feet up on
one of the branches. Walking home from
school we'd use our imagination to turn that
ball -like fungus into all kinds of imaginary
things. Mostly, looking back, I remember it
looked like a little hear cub that had bravely
limbed a tree only to find itself out on a limb
and holding on for dear life until mother could
come to the rescue.
But they're gone now, all of them. Gone to
firewood. Many didn't even come to that
useful an end. By the time the trees 'died,
most people in our old neighbourhood didn't
even burn wood any more. They've switched
instead to the convenience of oil furnaces. No
more cutting wood every summer. No more
stacking wood in the woodshed to keep dry.
No more lugging wood to the wood box or the
furnace room. No more awaking to a frigid
house after the block in the stove burned out
overnight.
50, many of the trees just fell down. First
the hark peeled off in huge hunks, then the
smaller branches broke off in the strong
winds. Then the larger branches , rotted,
weakened and fell.
The trees that were once so beautiful were
now eyesores .and dangerous to boot. The
government, realizing something had to be
done, began giving grants to farmers 'to cut
down dead elms on their farms. Work gangs
were organized by municipalites to remove
dead trees. They were cut down, blocked and
piled in big piles to he burned...a pittiful end
