large enough to wander through at leisure.
The Tower of London has on display a full
scale replica of the British Crown Jewels,
while at Dunvegan Castle visitors can see a
reproduction .of a medieval castle dungeon.
Cavendish is the settling for L.M.
Montgomery's Anne of Green Gables.
Anyone who has read this story will want to
visit Green Gables House; but don't forget
Rainbow Valley, which features a Children's
Farm, Fantasy Area, and Flying Saucer; or
the Royal Atlantic Wax Museum.
East of Cavendish, the Blue Heron Drive
goes to Charlottetown, capital of Prince
Edward Island, and the "cradle of Canadian
Confederation." Here, the old meets the
new. In Province House the Fathers of
Confederation met in 1864 to set in motion the
events which led to the union of the British
North American Colonies in 1867 to form
Canada. Next door stands the modern
Confederation Centre of the Arts, opened in
1964 to commemorate the centennial of this
meeting. This is tfle home of the
Charlottetown Summer Festival, featuring
such works as Johnny Belinda and the
ever -popular Anne of Green Gables. The
Centre also houses a Children's Theatre, art
workshops and an Art Gallery.
Plan a picnic at the East Point Provincial
Park. Afterwards, take a short side trip to
Elmira to see the Elmira Railway Station
where the history of railroading in Prince
Edward Island is depicted through photo-
graphs and displays.
Nearby picturesque towns and villages
bear such names as Souris, Bay Fortune,
Launching Place, Montague, Gaspereaux and
Murray Harbour.
When in Montague, be sure to visit the
Garden of the -Gulf Museum where many
historic farm and household items are
featured.
For those who prefer to spend their
vacations on a golf course, the Island has
much to offer. There are seven 18 -hole
championship courses and two nine -hole
courses, and a number of them are located
outside the major centres. The Brudenell Golf
and Country Club is located in Kings County,
while the Mill River Provincial Golf Course is
situated along the scenic Mill River about 40
miles west of Summerside.
The beauty of Prince Edward Island, aside
from its beaches and gently rolling farmland,
is the fact that no'matter where you stay, you
are never far from anywhere else on the
Island (it's only 140 miles long and 40 miles
wide at most). If you decide to stay in one of
the towns or villages, or even in a farm tourist
home, you can easily travel to any of the
major attractions in a matter of a cobple of
hours. Crowds are few. Total population of
the whole province is only about 117,000.
Many of the towns and villages schedule
summer events ranging from fairs and
exhibitions to the Potato Blossom Festival in
O'Leary. There's lots to see and do in the
Island's smaller centres.
Prince Edward Island is easily accessible
by air or -automobile ferry. For further
information contact the Canadian Govern-
ment Office of Tourism, 150 Kent Street,
Ottawa, K1A OH6, Canada.
