Village Squire, 1976-04, Page 19same thing but these little boys and girls had dark, slanting eyes and wore their hair in pig tails. -When Betty Lou went home from school and had dinner, she had bread and meat and vegetables, but when supper time came on the other side of the world, the little boys and girls there went home to a supper of rice and vegetables because the farmers in that country grow a great deal of rice. One day a great rain came. It rained for days and days and covered the rice fields and soon the people had no rice to eat. The houses were flooded too and soon the little slant eyed boys and girls and their parents had no houses to live in and no clothes to wear as these things had all been swept away by the floods but of course Betty Lou didn't know about this as she lived away on the other side of the world and was very busy going to school learning her ABC's and playing with her little school mates. One day, Betty Lou was skipping when a teacher told her she was wanted in the principal's office. Poor Betty Lou. She couldn't thing of a single thing she had done wrong but she was frightened. The tears came but she went bravely to the principal's office. "Come in, dear," said Miss Mason, not looking at all cross. "I've wanted to see you for sometime." Betty Lou hardly dared to look up but when she did Miss Mason was smiling. "You see," said Miss Mason, "away over on the other side of the world, there has been a big flood and the little boys and girls over there have hardly any clothing left and it gets cold over there. Our school has decided to send a big bale of clothing. Each child will bring some outgrown clothing from home and we teachers are all going to start knitting. We have all admired your little blue hat and we are going to knit some just like it. Could I keep your hat here in the office until noon so we can count the stitches and take a pattern off it. I think the little children would like that, don't you?" Betty Lou thought so, too and gladly let Miss Mason keep her hat until noon. And that is why if you were to travel away to the other side of the world where little boys and girls have rice for supper every day, you would see a lot of children in pig tails wearing hats like Betty Lou's, in every cokr of the rainbow. Earl Rawson welcomes you to a new world of sensibly priced high fashion clothing for Spring. Now is the time to build a fashionable wardrobe of quality and elegance without extravagance.
