A short story for children
BY A.L. BODGES
Farmer Brown was not happy. He lived on a,big farm near a
large city and he liked his neat white farmhouse, and his big red
barn that had once been his Father's. He had a lot of red and
white cows that wandered through the meadows eating clover
and a big green tractor that he used to plow his fields. Two men
had come from the city in a big shining car and had told him they
needed his farm for a new subdivision.
While Farmer Brown had been busy milking his cows and
plowing his fields with his big green tractor, the city had been
growing and growing and now it needed Farmer Brown's fields
on which to build houses. The men talked about the great
shopping centre they were going to build with stores, theatres,
garages and super markets and right where Farmer Brown was
standing would be a big park right in the centre of the shopping
district.
Farmer Brown looked sadly at his nice farm and then he and
the men went away to the city and signed some papers and a few
days later workmen came to build houses and stores and
sidewalks and everything else you find in a big city, right where
Farmer Brown's cows used to wander through the buttercups and
daisies in the meadow.
After a neat row of houses had been built, a white haired lady
the neighbours called Miss Victoria moved into one of them
because she could no longer afford to live in the big house on the
hill. When some of her neighbors called, Miss Victoria liked to
make them a cup of tea. She would get out her nice tea set and
her pretty flowered cups and the dainty tea cosy she always kept
in a drawer and put it on the teapot to keep the tea warm.
In case you don't know what a tea cosy is, it's a little knitted or
crocheted jacket that looks something like a stocking cap and has
holes in it for the teapot spout and handle and it keeps the tea
from getting cold while the ladies eat their little cakes and talk
Well, one nice afternoon, Miss Victoria had just made herself a
cup of tea when she saw two men coming up.the walk. One wore a
high white collar and a dark suit and Miss Victoria knew right
away one was a minister so she asked the men in for a cup of tea.
They told her they wanted to build a church nearby and as
churches cost a lot they wondered if Miss Victoria could give
them some money to buy bricks and timber.
"Dear me," sighed Miss Victoria, "I would like so much to
help you build your cHurch but I'm a little short of money right
now. The moving and everything, you know----"
The men said that everyone got short of money sometimes and
if Miss Victoria could give a little later on, it would be quite all
right. They also told her that the women who lived in the block
were going to have.a big bazaar to raise some money for the
church and if Miss Victoria could rorake something for the sale,
they were sure it would be a big help.
After the men ,yvere gone, Miss Victoria sat for a long time in
