since the waitress used to see her coming to
the market. The quiet banter goes back and
forth. Like the rest of the market, it seems
like another world from the city outside.
The people who pinch the fruit and run
their fingers through the loose nuts in bins
seem predominated by the old and the young.
The old, perhaps because they remember the
way things used to be and in the market have
a chance to go back to the days before the
package became more important than what
was in it. The young students from the
university probably come because they're
looking for a bargain, because they like the
different feeling of the place, and like they
feeling of purity and naturalness in food.
They and the young men pushing babies in
strollers while their wives discuss the merits
of red versus brown potatoes with a farmer's
wife are part of a younger generation anxious
to get back to natural things in food. For
them, the market is a mecca in the city. For
everyone, it's an enjoyable, place to visit. ".
