big bins to be scooped out, weighed and sold.

counters tilled with cheeses of different
colours, textures, and tastes.
The smells of the food mingle with the
smell of the flower stalls. Tulips, geraniums,
chrysanthemums, hyacinths, Easter lilies and
ferns of all sorts battle for attention with both
colour and smell.
And the market is just the place for the
cook looking for ingredients for gourmet
meals. For one thing, the basics are so fresh.
For another thing exotic elements are
available here that are hard to find in most
shopping places- For instance there's Lotus
Foods which is really a small Chinese
supermarket. Many of the cans and bottles
• that line the shelves are the same as on the
shelves of any food store but there are also
the ingredients for Oriental cooking, like
canned water chestnuts, salted mustard
greens, shrimp noodles, grass jelly, sesame
pudding.
Then there's Kleiber's Deli with a wide
variety of meats and another delicatessan The
Family Delicatessan where you can get food
of Greek, Italian and Syrian origin. Not your
ordinary food store.
Even in the coffee shop at the Market
there's a different feeling than one gets in
most eating places in the city. It's a friendly,
if unadorned place where the waitresses and
customers seem like old friends. The elderly
lady serving the coffee chats with a customer
about his daughter and hnw she's grown
