Theatre
Theatre London -
You've come
a long way baby
When Heinar Pillar took over Theatre
London only five years ago, he was charged
with turning an amateur theatre into a
professional company. Not only did he
succeed, but he made Theatre London into a
model for other "regional" theatres across
the country.
Pillar is leaving after this season and his
successor, Stratford's William Hutt, not only
is maintaining standards, he's apparently
determined to make Theatre London about
the most impressive theatre in the nation next
winter.
Hutt recently announced plans for the
1976-77 season which will include the biggest
Canadian stars, some of the best Canadian
directors and some of the weightiest shows
any theatre in Canada is likely to produce.
The stars include Mr. Hutt himself, former
Londoner Hume Cronyn now a classical actor
of international stature, his wife Jessica
Tandy, Stratford stalward Pat Galloway and
Donald Davis.
The plays include George Bernard Shaw's
Canadida, starring Miss Galloway; The Many
Faces of Love starring Mr. Cronyn and Miss
Tandy in excerpts from The Four -Poster, 1 he
Lion in Winter, A delicate Balance, A
Streetcar Named Desire, as well as selections
from such writers as Shakespeare, Dostoev-
sky, Thomas Wolfe and Ogden Nash; a
special Christmas adaptation of Through the
Looking Glass by Lewis Carroll; Long Day's
Journey into Night, by Eugene O'Neill; Les
Belles-Souers, by Michel Tremblay; Chekov's
Seagull in a new adaptation by David French
and finally, School for Wives, starring Mr.
Davis.
Directors include former Stratford artistic
director Jean Gascon, Bill Glassco of
Toronto's Tarragon Theatre, Keith Turnbull,
Mr. Hutt and possibly (it still has to be
worked out), Robin Phillips artistic director at
Stratford who would direct the O'Neill play
which stars Mr. Hutt.
Mr. Hutt will increase the rehearsal time
for plays to four weeks next year from three
and will cut out the Monday night previews in
favour of a technical and dress rehearsal.
Each show will open on Thursday and run two
and a half weeks as at present.
It will be the final big bag before the Grand
Theatre, home of Theatre London closes for a
year for renovations.
It was also announced recently that Theatre
London has been granted $971,000 from the
Wintario fund toward the massive renova-
tions to the Grand which will see new
ancillary facilities around the 800 -seat
auditorium and creations of a smaller
300 -seat auditorium which will host smaller
shows, experimental theatre and children's
theatre.
