Village Squire, 1976-02, Page 32work: On Feb. 13 at 7 30 the presentation will
be "Text of Light", Stan Brakhage.
Brakhage's films are about the "seeing"
experience. Here he perceives a whole world
in a particle of refracted light. The shifting
patterns and colour were merely photograph-
ed over a long time and edited into a highly
structured film, analogous to a visual
composition. It is a perfect realization of his
own manifesto, in Metaphors of Vision
(1963): "Imagine a world alive with
incomprehensible objects and shimmering
with an endless variety of movement
graduations of colour."
Text of Light is a complex film which makes
its audience work at every change of image. It
is a bright prismatic spectre in high-contrast
black...the forms are only viable when
interpreted by the viewer. The film has met
with a very high critical acclaim from the
historians of experimental cinema including
Jonas Mekas, who declared the film a
breakthrough in his now -defunct Village
Voice Column.
March 1, 1976 - 7:30 p.m. "My Word" Vito
Acconci. Acconci has for some time figured
prominently in the New York 'conceptual
school." His work, at varying levels concerns
the performance of human behavior in
awareness of/reaction to conditions of
physical and emotional stimuli. His use of
video/film is primarily the documentation of
this personalized experience - from the point
of view of' person(s) experiencing it - which,
by the very privateness of film and especially
video, relates viewer independent of
audience/involved in some confidence.
"My Word" (1973-74, b/w) is a brilliant
play on word thought in contrast to word said.
Here reading, another silent act of language
is the parallel processiby which the 'reading'
of Acconci's mind is (only) then possible in
this 120 min. silent monologue. Cards iri
sequence contain various printed propositions
- arguments against direct/oral communica-
tion with three women who never appear:
'We don't -have to talk,' or 'Cut the talk.
Come Closer. Actions speak louder than
words', etc.
