The Sea Marsh course takes off in the
direction of Calibogue Sound through the
forests. It is a twisting, winding layout,
challenging all the way.
Palmetto Dunes, on the same island, has -
two beauties - the Robert Trent Jones course
and a new one, the George Fazio 18, built to
test talents and patience.
It has English cut, rolling fairways
surrounded by oaks, palmetto and magnolias,
and very generous bunkers.
Every hole parallels another on the right
side, while play is out of bounds on the left of
16 fairways. Lagoons and ponds wind through
eight holes.
Each hole has at least five different tees -
the par -four 11th has six and the 14th a long,_
terraced -down tee which makes the par -three
one of the most picturesque.
Number 17 can be the most troublesome.
For about eight months of the year the
southwest wind will blow up the lagoon and,
says head pro Dick Young:
"When the wind is against you and the tees
are back, the pro will need a well -hit fairway
wood to reach the green. But an average
golfer will need a small cannon!"
The par -72 Trent Jones course measures
6,707 yards frost the championship tees,
6,131 yards from the regular ones.
Both nines are well wooded and most holes
are bordered by trees or water.
Golf and Georgia are also synonymous - not
surprisingly, since 17th Century Scottish
settlers introduced the game to Savannah
Now, it has developed into something akin
to worship and courses are split among three
regions: The coastal plain, which includes the
Golden Isles and Savannah where the courses
either overlook the ocean or are bordered by
pine and live oak and lined with Spanish
moss; the Piedmont, within rolling plateau, a
fertile area with lush green carpets and
flower -bordered fairways; and North Georgia,
an area rich in mountains, waterfalls, trout
streams, covered bridges and lakes.
The range is vast and varied..
In the Golden Isles, a trio of sunwashed
islands almo t within driving range of
Jacksonville, (orida, three lush -green
oak -lined sprea s and the nearby Bruns k 1
layout provide upwards of 200 holes of
scintillating golf within an area of 20 miles
under skies which are rarely obnoxious.
To reach either Jekyll, St. Simon's or Sea
Island, the approach,shot can be made by air
from Atlanta, 260 miles away, or by road for
a day's sampling from Jacksonville, just 75
miles distant
Elsewhere, within easy driving distance,
are the Savannah Inn and Country Club, a
challenger with 76 bunkers, 10 water holes,
contoured fairways and raised greens,
Callaway Gardens, Pine Mountain, 80 miles
southwest of Atlanta, which has three
18 -holes and one nine bordered by flowers
and trees; and Helen, with its touch 01
