Village Squire, 1975-12, Page 32dinner table - tables from the church and
chairs from the undertaker. But there are
always changes at family gatherings, some
new faces and some loved ones missing.
Certain foods are traditional in all families
and some in only a few. Mince pie was
originally made of choice foods from the East,
especially the spices. Plum pudding has a
curious origin, according to one legend. The
king and a group -of hunters were lost in the
forest and food was running, short. In
desperation, the poor cook put all there was
together in the cooking pot, and so the plum
-pudding came into being - with many
refinements in our day, of course. In some
parts of England, it was the custom to make
the Christmas pudding on a certain Saturday
in Advent, and each member of the family
took a turn stirring it. As it happened, the
Collect for the Following Sunday began
something like "Stir up, 0 Lord..." so that
day became Stir Up Sunday, among the Choir
boys if no one else. Some of our family favour
a simple white suet pudding with plenty of
red and green fruit and served with a lemon
flavoured sauce. It is not so rich after lavish
servings of turkey, dressing and gravy.
Well, there are some of the things I have
read or remembered about the Carols and
Customs of this festive season, which, by the
way was Christes Messe, Christ's Mass, and
finally Christmas. You will recall many more,
and after all, I am not trying to fill the whole
paper. But....Do you remember " 'Twas the
night befor6 Christmas and all through ,the
house"? A year ago, I took a 3 -year-old on my
knee and repeated the verses Just For Her.
She was fascin 3ted. And I was thrilled. Try it
