us around with his fiddle and played along.
He enjoyed doing that.
Another beautiful custom is setting up the
Nativity Scene or Creche. It may be large,
lavish and resplendent, or simple and
humble. I saw one with a roof of thatch in a
park in the middle of a large industrial city.
St. Francis of Assissi has been credited with
the idea of a Creche to impress on the
illiterate people of his day the story of the
coming of Christ, because seeing the People,
the animals and the stable would be more
understandable than just hearing the story.
Last year, the children of our Sunday School
gave a little Nativity Play at the morning
service. _They had the stable scene set up at
the front of the church. When the play was
over, a soloist sang a simple carol with the
line The homely beasts around Him stood".
We choir members were the only 'beasts' I
could see around Him.
A charming story I have heard in the same
connection was about a very small girl who
had gone with the others to see The Christ
Child in the manger. She was last in line and
was just turning to go away when she
suddenly went back and took The Baby from
the manger and carried Him away with her.
She wasn't going to leave Him there all alone
and lonely! Many of the sacred Carols were
first used in the old Nativity and Mystery
Plays, and 'are very beautiful in both sound
and sentiment.
Christmas is hardly Christmas without
family and friendly visits, feasting and
happiness. For one or two years, our family
had forty or more around the Christmas
