Village Squire, 1975-12, Page 28Carols are jolly and fast moving.
St. Nicholas was a rich man who really
lived, but he enjoyed giving gifts rather than
keeping his money for himself. It is said that
a poor man had three beautiful daughters but
as he could not provide them with marriage
dowries, he was going to sell them into
slavery. Nicholas heard about this and gave
them money wrapped in stockings and
dropped down the chimney. After his death
on December 6th, people in some countries
gave gifts on that day. Maybe some New
Canadians still do. The Dutch settlers in
North America brought St. Nicholas with
them. He drove reindeer (probably a
Northern European custom) and he was
called Santa Mikalaus which was changed to
Santa Claus. Other names were Sinterklaas,
Kris Kringle and Knect Ruprecht As you can
see, many of our customs had their beginning
in this legend, and with slight variations, are
found in many countries. Another gift day
was St. Stephen's Day or Boxing Day when
boxes of gifts and food were given to the poor
and to servants The King Wencelas story
occurred on St. Stephen's Day and the music
of that Carol is an old Spring Carol. In many
countries, it was traditional to give only
simple gifts How times have changed!
Christmas lights have become a part of our
culture. This probably goes back to pagan
days originally, but the modern custom
signifies (or should) Christ, the Light of the
World. In some churches, a coloured candle is
lighted each Sunday in Advent, and at the
Christmas Eve Service or on Christmas
Sunday a whi'e candle in the centre is lighted
