Village Squire, 1975-12, Page 7Bernard Chouinard turned a life-long passion for books into a business at The Book Shelf. forced to raise some prices because the store has been "discovered" by collectors. When he started out he had little knowledge of what books were valuable to collectors, he says. He's quickly learning though as he watches people grab a valuable book and walk out chuckling with the book under their arm which they bought for a pittance. Most of the customers, however, aren't collectors and are very devoted to the little shop. Many come in two or three times a week. Bernie carries a little notebook when he goes out buying books with the names of books people have asked him to try and locate. Although the store is now bulging with between 20 and 25,000 books either on the shelves or in the back storeroom, he usually can tell a shopper if he has a book or not because he looks at•each book's title and makes a mental note as he unpacks each new acquisition. Like most people who are hooked on books, Bernie caught the disease when a child. He grew up in a small Quebec town of only about 200 people.
