Village Squire, 1975-11, Page 29The Bedford Hotel -
as good as ever
It's been over two years, believe it or not,
since the Bedford Hotel dining room was
reviewed in this publication. A lot can happen
in two years in the food business, especially
when a business changes hands as the
Bedford has. So when it came time to go out
with some friends for dinner recently, we
decided to give the Bedford a try.
We weren't disappointed.
Our friends, from the city, were also
impressed by the quiet ease of the old hotel
and the excellence of the food.
Restaurants are always being urged to
make more use of the local produce and The
Bedford is one place that does. Two fish
dishes are offered that make use of Lake
Huron Perch and pickerel. One of the diners
chose the perch. Another chose the seafood
platter and the two gentlemen chose the
milled grill.
All had the soup of the hotel and and found
it quite good. A salad followed with a choice
of dressings.
The main dishes were enjoyed by each of
those present. The lady enjoyed her perch
dinner which consisted of 8-10 perch fillets,
lemon wedges, french fries and broccoli,
served on a side dish.
The second lady's seafood plate, a mixture
of seafoods, was also enjoyed.
The mixed grill that the gentlemen chose
proved both interesting and tasty. It
'contained small portions of grilled steak, pork
chop, Iamb chop and a sausage, all expertly
cooked and tasty. And filling.
Still everyone managed room for dessert.
The first choise of the ladies was not available
so everyone ended up with the pecan pie
which was a great way to end up a meal.
The diningroom itself is a relaxing place.
The mile -high ceilings give it an airy feeling
that can't be matched in more modern
buildings. There are some signs of age, but
the overall feeling is one of graceful old age,
complete to the dark old pictures on the walls.
The diningroom on a Saturday night was
less than half full. It seems a shame that
many people from the area are so busy
scrambling to get into the more fashionable,
(and expensive), diningspots that have
sprung up in the area that they've overlooked
a good old friend like the Bedford. It may not
be as "in", but it's still a nice relaxing place
to spend an evening.
