Village Squire, 1975-11, Page 11completed, food was plentiful, mostly held mice, a few chipmunks and sometimes a bird surprised at night on its nest, the eggs were tasty tidbits too. As the female became heavier she played about gently and stayed close to home. The dog ranged farther afield and brought food to the den. They nuzzled each other, affectionate and happy together. In May the pups were born, there were five of them. The birth was difficult...the female was frightened, tried to help herself too quickly and killed the first pup. She ran outside with it and trotted back and forth holding the dead pup in her mouth The male gurgled and cooed trying to soothe her. She pawed a small hole, stuffed the pup in it and returned to the den. The next pup suffered the same fate, and it was a close thing then whether any would survive but the last three births came so quickly that the mother was surprised. She settled down to cleaning and nuzzling these small creatures that were somehow part of herself. She ate the afterbirth and felt sick. The pups were whimpering and her teats were sore. She felt feverish and would have liked a drink but the creek was too far and she was tied here by a responsibility not entirely welcome. She picked up a pup in her mouth and went outside to run up and down again. Reynard attempted to quiet her. _he got in her way but she brushed past ignoring him- Once more the whole litter was in danger. Reynard acted firmly, he blocked her path and spoke sternly. "Stop this nonsense Rowena. Cool down, cool down, now this sort of thing happens often to married couples." Rowena calmed, once the nervous trot was stopped good sense returned. She took the pup inside and nursed all three. They stopped nattering and went to sleep. The den was quiet and the vixen slept too. The dog sat down on his haunches and regarded the surrounding world confidently. This was the second most important thing he had done toward the production of foxes in Huron County.
