Bayview Tourist
Tavern - a family
sort of place
In summer time we just naturally seem to
gravitate toward the lake shore. It's one of the
great pleasures of living in this part of the
country that you can make a trip with the kids
to the beach just for an afternoon. Of course
come supper time you're not likely to feel like
heading home and cooking a meal. For many,
it means a trip to a restaurant.
Bayview Tourist Tavern, about halfway
between two of the most popular summer
playgrounds, Bayfield and Grand Bend, is the
kind of place you won't feel out of place with
kids, even those who may be a little the worse
for wear after a day of sand and sun. It's a
comfortable, casual place to eat.
Situated as it is one the main tourist artery
along the Lake Huron shoreline it draws a
wide cross-section of the public for clientelle.
The day we dropped in for lunch, for instance,
there were some typical tourists, some
workmen from a building site nearby, and a
party of Catholic teachers.
Service was fast and friendly, provided by
some neatly dressed students who help meet
the big boom in the summer. One couple
nearby were served and were on the road
again in only 15 minutes; not exactly a
recommended way to enjoy your food, but it's
nice to have service that fast.
We ordered something lighter for lunch,
not quite up to the full dinner side of the
menu (which included steak at $6.00). We
tried an old standy-by, fish and chips.
The short wait gave us a chance to look
around. The restaurant is a clean bright spot,
almost like open air in the summer because

The fish and chips: well we must confess
we've had better; but; we've also had a lot
worse. On the whole the meal seemed to be
about what you'd get at your average family
restaurant. Above average were the buns,
which came hot and as fresh as if they'd come
straight from the oven.
The verdict: no gourmet dining room but
good family fare in pleasant surroundings
with excellent service.
