My year of liberation?
BY CARMAN SEATON
After reading those special bulletins in our
daily papers honouring Women's Internation-
al Year, I became hooked on the importance
on my existence and decided to "Why Not"
too. After all, we must be fairly important to
Canada's economy as they're spending five
million dollars this year to promote the idea.
(You know how we can accomplish anything.)
It really got me thinking about the
injustices forced upon me and my limitations
in life. Why must I always be the one to back
down (well, some of the time anyway) and
soothe the family ruffles when hell breaks
loose?
My decision was made one Monday
'morning after viewing the debris from the
weekend. My rights were questionable and I .
was not respected as a person. I filled out a
clipping from the paper requesting booklets
on "How To" and the "Why Not" pin. As a
final gesture I even ticked off the Ms. block.
With thoughts of better days ahead I was
able to tackle my "housewife" chores with
renewed energy. While washing, I studied
my barren, allotted spot in the basement and
realized I was gypped there too. Why should
"He" have the pin-ups in the wine cellar
which resembled "Rouge's Gallery" sans
clothing? if it works for them why not for us?
The idea made me hum a little, visualizing
those Play Girl centre folds. I could even out
do him and make mobiles swaying in the
breeze from the dryer.
The opportunities ,were endless and I
wondered why I had waited so long to take
action. With note -book in hand I prepared a
schedule of household duties which could be
divided among the family when I found a new
career.
The days flew by but nothing happened.
Realizing I was dealing with the government
on two levels (post office and "Why Not"
Co.) I remained patient and understanding.
But, after four weeks I made snide remarks to
my husband about Post Office efficiency.
Now there comes the bummer, never,
never give your husband a letter to post that
will undermine his standard of living. He'll
rip it up, throw it away and admit it with a
look of unapproachable justification (that is
when his hand is forced).
It took a few non -speaking days with the
family to come to terms with myself and
Women's International Year. I'm sorry I can't
support the cause, but I've started too late in
the game to retrain my men and they'll just
have to hang in there without me. Another
thing, those Play Girl centre -folds really don't
turn me on the way they should. I always
giggle while glancing at the "all togethers"
lounging on sofas holding a leopard or some
other unrelated object to romance. I guess he
can keep his pictures, they're 1945 models
and hopefully heavier than me by now. With
any kind of luck they should be proud
grandmothers.
I am reaping some benefits from the
programme, he's taking me out more often
and tries to stay awake after supper.
If I ever think that this is a typical male
tactic to try and defeat us again I shall
recommend a new method of communication.
Forget about the mail service girls, use hand
bills and deliver them before the old man gets
home from work.
