Nothing swank
but good food and service
There's nothing swank about the Goderich
Restaurant on West Street in Goderich. It's
the ordinary everyday kind of restaurant.
It's the kind of place you'll see everyone
from workers just off the day shift at the local
factory, to young couples with children to kids
on their way to the movies.
This used to be a sort of unofficial press
club for the area because of the location of the
Goderich Signal -Star across the street. You
could likely meet somebody from the media
there no matter what time of day you picked,
but the paper moved last year to its new plant
on the south side of town and that part of the
business dropped off.
We dropped in one Friday evening recently
to sample the fare. With the foreknowledge
that this was an average middle-class
restaurant, we had a pleasant time.
We were served by the one rushed waitress
in the room. Perhaps this accounted for the
fact that the usual glass of water was not
provided. Aside from that, however, we
couldn't really complain about the service or
the food.
The lady ordered filet mignon smothered in
mushrooms. The man ordered rainbow trout.
Included in the price of both meals was a
chef's salad with what tasted like a special
house dressing. Also part of the meal was a
bun for each of us, nicely warmed.
The filet came served on a wooden steak
board. The lady found it to her liking. It was
God cares
When the wind howls round my lonely cot,
1 thank my God for my humble lot.
When little birds in their nest swing high,
I'm thankful God cares for such as 1.
When snow drifts over roof and spire,
I thank my God for my glowing fire.
When a skylark sings in Heaven's blue,
I thank my God for blessings, true.
When rain on the roof sings a lullaby,
I fall asleep with a grateful sigh,
In spite of space and depth and time,
I know God careth, always, for me and mine.

accompanied by an order of french fries and
green beans.
The trout was also good though it was
obviously not fresh (but what can you expect
for a price of under 53.00). The french fries
were better than your average restaurant
kind. The beans, however, were even lower
than the low rating most restaurants get for
their vegetables. Frozen is bad enough, but
these must have been the canned variety.
We'd just as soon have done without.
The man decided to sample the pies for
dessert and was quite pleased with the butter
pecan pie brought. It rated among the better
restaurant pies we've had in a while.
In all, it was a satisfying experience. You'll
find restaurants with better food and a better
-decor around the area but for a total bill of
$10.87 how can you complain very much. The
Goderich restaurant is a good ordinary
restaurant, and that's all it pretends to be.
