Village Squire, 1975-03, Page 7from both the inside and the outside. He's
been a teacher and a member of the Huron
County Board of Education:
He says the local school boards haven't
been given the authority to do what they
believe best and that's one of the reasons
they haven't been functioning too well.
"They are looked upon by teachers and by
students as sort of an isolated board that is
removed from the reality. They seem to be in
an ivory tower. There seems to be a lot of red
tape that teachers have to go through. In
other words if they hire the smallest little
articles the amount of paper work that they
have to submit to the local boards is
unbelievable. The teachers aren't satisfied
with the system. The students very seldom
get to see the board members whereas when
you had the local school boards system, it
wouldn't be uncommon for the school board
members to be in the school frequently."
Mr. Gaunt says there seems to be a real
superstructure that isn't doing the job for
which it was created. Added to this is the
increase in costs.
Redistribution is a current thorn in the side
of all three members. Various plans for
redistribution had been discussed and tossed
out. The last plan had been reasonably.
adequate as far as they were concerned but
was rejected by the Conservatives in the
Middlesex area where Mr, Riddell would
have taken over part of the county, weakening
the position of a Tory. The proposals are nov.
back with the redistribution commission
There is still the suspicion that there might be
an attempt to drop Mr. Gaunt's riding
altogether and carve it up between Huron and
the Grey -Bruce ridings.
Over lunch the three discuss the possible
date of the recalling of the Legislature. They
won't know until a very short time before the
Legislature resumes when they will have to
go back to Toronto (after Christmas they had
a day's notice). It's the kind of thing that
makes an M.P.P.'s life interesting, but never
dull.
